Chapter 1: The Siren
At 2:47 AM, the oscilloscope trace flatlined. Vera had seen anomalies three times this week. Small spikes. Probably nothing. She pressed her fingers against the desk edge until the wood bit back.
Below: 117 meters of tunnel, repurposed accelerator housing. Above: surface installations, air-raid warnings. In between: seventeen monitors, five thermoses (four empty), one cup from this morning with a skin forming on its surface. Fluorescent strips cast everything in a white that made noon and midnight identical. No window. No reference point. Time existed only in digital readouts and the siren signals that bled through the reinforced ventilation.
Phosphorescent strips had been applied once. Regulation removed them. Facility preference: no light pollution. Before the war, someone had cared enough to try. That someone was gone. Transferred. Reassigned. Vera didn’t ask who.
Air raid siren. Again.
Her hand jerked. Notebook slipped. Caught. Achtung. Down through the ventilation shaft, the siren wound down—that high frequency that bypassed the ear and struck the spine directly. Involuntary response. Not fear. Not analysis. Just nervous system on stimulus. Three times today. Four yesterday. Bombing patterns shifted north.

Machines were more predictable than people.
Scrolling back through raw data: four terabytes of quantum state information. Most was noise—quantum decoherence, electronic drift, gravitational variations in Earth’s magnetic field. The baseline. Anything deviating from it meant something.
Outside the degradation curve: three times in six days. Tuesday 14:22:03.847. Thursday 22:56:41.231. Tonight 02:47:15.004. No apparent trigger. No power fluctuations. No external EM interference. Self-diagnostics nominal.
Frequency analysis: narrow bandwidth, almost no harmonic distortion. Clean. Coherent. Signal, not noise.
Pattern underlying the randomness. Spacing showed structure: 6d 8h 38m (spike one to two); 8d 3h 43m (spike two to three). Nested periodicity in the intervals themselves.
Fourier transform—nothing. Harmonic decomposition—nothing. Bayesian analysis on timestamps—nothing screaming „message.“ But not degradation. Not random. Architecture.
One more spike needed. Then a predictive model. Prediction separated signal from noise. If she could forecast the next occurrence, it was real. If the timing was random, she was just looking at her own assumptions reflected back.
„Still here?“
From behind the server stack: Mila Brenner, thermos in hand like ammunition. 29 years old. Bundeswehr cryptographer, three months assigned to this facility (military word for conscripted expertise). She moved with efficient silence—the kind that made you forget she was in a room until she wasn’t. Then you’d notice how much had changed while you weren’t looking.
„Insomnia is not tactical,“ Vera said.
„No.“ Setting the thermos down beside the empty cup—just a fact, delivered low and precise, German-accented English. „But the data keeps running.“
Siren monitor: red indicator pulsing, all-clear signal bouncing back from surface listening posts. Nothing incoming. War breathes. Exhales. Work in the gaps.
„Oscilloscope is showing artifacts. Low amplitude, structured.“ Gesturing without pointing—gestures were for convincing. Data was sufficient. „Every 10 milliseconds. Clock synchronization issue, maybe, but system logs show no correlation with power fluctuations. Too regular. Like watching someone type on a keyboard you can’t see.“
„Vera.“
Mid-sentence she stopped.
Mila looked at her the way she looked at non-parsing code: professional patience reserved for problems yielding to sufficient force. „The coffee is terrible. Drink it anyway. You’ve been here sixteen hours.“
„Seventeen. And the anomaly could indicate—“
„Could indicate nothing until you sleep.“ Hand on desk edge—absolute stillness. „I checked the compound air cyclers at 2145. You’re breathing carbon dioxide at 2.1 percent. Threshold where you start making errors without recognizing them. Brain optimizes for speed instead of accuracy.“
Two-point-one percent was just beneath the level where the human sensory apparatus began to fail in ways the human mind couldn’t detect. She’d read the studies. Memorized the numbers. Knowledge never helped when it was her own blood chemistry.
„Physical limits are physics,“ Mila continued, matter-of-fact. „You taught me that. Matter responds to conditions. You’re matter.“
Heat came through the metal of the thermos like a reprieve.
„The siren is psychological noise. Statistically, bombs fall within 12 kilometers of city center. We’re 8 kilometers underground, 22 kilometers northwest. Geometry makes direct strike probability—“
„Negligible. Yes. Still, statistics are for after. Now you’re at your CO2 limit. Judgment is degraded. You’ll notice in forty minutes, after the errors are made. That’s the physiological window. By then, corrupted data.“
Bitter coffee. Forgotten what she wanted to taste.
Mila turned toward the server stack.
„Why are you awake?“ Vera called.
„Piano. Basement section. Same as you. Some things don’t sleep. They function better while tired.“
Footsteps fading. Lab settling back: white noise of fans, electronic chirp of monitors every 100 milliseconds, distant pump moving coolant through quantum core. Below the noise, in the gaps, war breathed on.
Waiting until certain Mila was gone, then opening a secure terminal to pull up the message queue from Luc. His note at 22:15: Spike detected. Pattern unknown. Not in any expected failure mode. Request analysis when available.
Luc was good. No panic at unexpected data. Log it. Move on. Let someone else understand. That was the arrangement: Vera analyzed, Luc maintained, Mila encrypted. Nobody trusted each other. Everybody trusted the machines.
Opening a new terminal: Preliminary findings: Not random. Not detector degradation. Pattern suggests periodicity, but interval variance exceeds statistical tolerance. Awaiting next occurrence. Will coordinate with you if recurrence timing becomes predictable. Leaving out the CO2 levels. Luc had enough managing power distribution across three sectors while the surface grid remained unstable.
Notes kept differently: no history, no metadata. Just the data points predicting the next moment. Faster. Compressed. The person before her—whoever—had recorded everything. Names. Routines. Faces. Writing like someone who only believed in the next spike, the next measurement.
One still here. The other: personnel roster logged as „transferred.“ Same template language that had logged Emil’s death two months ago. Served with distinction. Our condolences. War had a formula for disappearance.
At the oscilloscope: that trace, that pattern. Lab book note: 0247 – artifact clustering, 10ms intervals, review with Luc.
On the desk corner: a photograph in a frame. Vera did not look at it. Positioning kept it in peripheral vision. The frame’s edge. Top inch of glass. Not the face.
A frame was just a place to keep a memory already in her head.
Photo was distraction. Better to keep hands moving.
Pulling up backup logs, cross-referencing spike timing against system inputs. Routine verification. Work that didn’t require sleep or the part of the brain that once believed there could be a different future.
Measurements. Data. Waiting for the next spike.
